Key rules

Decimal places (d.p.): Count digits after the decimal point. Look at the next digit — if 5 or more, round up; if less than 5, round down.

Significant figures (s.f.): Count from the first non-zero digit. Apply the same rule.

\(3.746\) to 2 d.p. = \(3.75\)  ·  \(0.004382\) to 2 s.f. = \(0.0044\)
